Christine TownsendJanuary 26, 2012Christine graduated from the Health Sciences Centre with an Outstanding Award of Achievement and went on to nurse at HSC,and then Fort McMurray Hospital in Alberta. She had a great love of nursing and specialized in Intensive Care, Critical Care and Emergency. She also nursed internationally in the Gulf War - Saudi Arabia in 1990. Herta VothJanuary 23, 2012The nurses' training Herta received at the Misericordia Hospital opened up a lifetime of service for her in many places, including Canada, Columbia, Panama and Bolivia. Mary GrayJanuary 11, 2012May moved to Canada from Northern Ireland as a Nursing Sister and within three days of being in Winnipeg, she had a secured a nursing position. She was a nurse at Health Sciences Centre, Grace Hospital and Deer Lodge Centre. Before retiring, she founded and managed a wheelchair service program for the Society for Crippled Children and Adults. Beverley FortuneJanuary 2012Beverley obtained her LPN license in 1971 and had a brief nursing career in geriatrics. She maintained a genuine affection and compassion for older adults throughout her life. Sister Gabriel (Helen) CzarnowasJanuary 5, 2012Sister Czarnowas began her nursing career at Johnson Memorial Hospital (Gimli), followed by years of service at Sacred Heart Hospital (Russell), Crerar Hospital (Winnipegosis), St. Mary's Hospital (Birtle) and the Russell District Hospital (Russell). She is remembered as a dedicated, comforting nurse who always had a caring smile. Etta LevequeJanuary 5, 2012Etta moved to Winnipeg to attend nursing school at the Misericordia General Hospital and graduated as a registered nurse in 1941. When she married in 1947, she left nursing to raise her family. Nursing was however her passion, as she remained involved with the Misericordia Nurses Alumni for many years and served as the editor of their bulletin, and founder of the Life Membership Program. She returned later to nursing on a full time basis where she served as the evening coordinator at Taché Nursing Centre until she retired in 1985. Eileen SwiderekDecember 28, 2011Eileen was a proud R.N. working at several places including the Grace Hospital. Before her retirement in 2005, she spent 23 years at Health Sciences Centre Rehab on the Spinal Cord and Amputee ward. She always enjoyed the nursing reunions with the Class of 1962 and valued her nursing friends. Anne RempelDecember 23, 2011Anne found great joy in her job caring for seniors. Her nursing skills and compassion impacted others and she was equally blessed by their love in return. Franca Maria Carmela KizDecember 15, 2011Franca obtained her RN certification through the St. Boniface Hospital nursing program in 1989. She enjoyed a rich and varied nursing career, working obstetrical, medical and surgical departments and later outpatient and finally research-based nursing work. Jean DregerDecember 14, 2011Jean earned her nursing degree in 1954 in Australia. After a few years of nursing she put her career on hold so she could travel the world, one of her destinations being Winnipeg. Upon her return to Canada in the mid 1960s she settled in Winnipeg and worked at St. Boniface Hospital. Alice ChallonerDecember 10, 2011From a very young age, Alice loved babies. After becoming a registered nurse, it wasn't long before she found herself working in the Women's Hospital as a labour and delivery nurse and then, for the last five years of her career, as a member of the perinatal relief team. Alice worked in the Women's Hospital, supporting mothers and their babies, for almost 30 years, retiring in 2009. Brenda LedouxSeptember 24,2011Brenda worked at Health Sciences Centre, Deer Lodge Center, Meadow Wood Manor and Heritage Lodge. She was a caring and devoted nurse and had fond memories of her co-workers. She was a no-nonsense, determined, hard working woman who instilled in her children a strong work ethic and understanding that learning was a lifelong endeavour.Adina PennerAugust 20, 2011 Adina was very determined and made many sacrifices in pursuit of her nursing career. She completed her training and started nursing at the Grace Hospital in 1960then completed a BSc in Nursing which led to a teaching position at the Grace Hospital School of Nursing.Adina's students were always very important to her and she appreciated the kindness and respect she received from her former students.Anne ProvenskiAugust 20, 2011 Anne grew up in St. Andrews, MB. Patricia HughesFebruary 9, 2011 Pat worked as a nurse for many years and spent the last years before retirement with the City of Winnipeg. After retiring she spent many hours volunteering for Cancer Care.Mary Edith SawatzkyFebruary 1, 2011 Mary spent her working years as a nurse in the Morden, Winkler, and Boundary Trails hospitals. She also dedicated many hours of volunteer work with the Winkler Figure Skating Club and the Pembina Valley Skating region. She loved to travel to Vancouver, Montreal, Hawaii, Europe and as far as South Africa.Colleen DegagneJanuary 28, 2011 Colleen enrolled at the St. Boniface General Hospital School of Nursing in 1981 and shortly after graduating started a part-time job at the St. Boniface that lasted for one year. In 1984, she accepted a position in the Intensive Care Unit at the Brandon General Hospital. Colleen was a passionate, compassionate and dedicated nurse throughout her entire career. She loved her work in the ICU. Over the course of 26 years, Colleen treated all patients like she would want to be treated, earning the respect of the Brandon medical community, while she made many strong and lasting friendships.Helen RademakerDecember 18,2010 Helen completed her Registered Nurse's training at St.Boniface School of Nursing and worked in Labour and Delivery at Local 5 for many years. In fact, her long career at St.Boniface hospital gave her some of her closest friends. Helen was well known for her volunteerism and over the years she volunteered at many organizations including the Crisis Pregnancy Centre.Roxanne Noelle MillarDecember 1, 2010 Roxanne, a compassionate nurse from St.Boniface Hospital, is remebered for always bringing laughter, love and joy wherever she went.Nora Rose JohnsonOctober 5, 2010 Nora was a Sergeant during the Second World War, then worked in bookkeeping, real estate and finally realized her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. After raising her children, she took her RN at 49 years of age and worked at St. Boniface Hospital until she was 67. She especially loved her time nursing in the North.Amanda Frida Jazbec SantoroOctober 3, 2010 Amanda was a nurse at Seven Oaks Hospital. She was a very caring, loving, and passionate person. Her smile and laughter will be missed by everyone.Noreen Anne WebsterSeptember 29,2010 Noreen entered nursing training in September 1976 at Misericordia Hospital and graduated as a Registered Nurse in June of 1978. She retired in 2008 from the Swan Valley Health Facility after 30 years of practice. Noreen loved her profession, and made many close friends during these times.Theresa (Terrie) ThorsteinsonAugust 27, 2010 Terrie went back to school to become a nurse, while raising her three children, and proudly graduated in 1986 from Grace General Hospital.Terrie enjoyed a 24 year career in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at HSC and retired in 2004. She served on the MNU board as the representative HSC from May 2003 - January 2005. Terrie had such a love for nursing that in retirement she attained a license to practice in Arizona and Texas, and spent winters working. Gloria Beth Louise KliewerJune 6,2010 Gloria moved to Winnipeg in 1973 in order to complete the Intensive Care Post Graduate course at the Health Sciences Centre. After a brief stint in ICU at St. Boniface, she moved on to Concordia Hospital as Staff Development Educator. In 1987 she began bedside nursing with neonates at HSC followed by another brief stint with her first love, the ICU at Victoria General Hospital. But the babies beckoned her back again, this time to St Boniface Hospital, first as a bedside nurse and then as Head Nurse from 1991 to 1997.She then transferred back to HSC and worked one year in the Intermediate Care Nursery then back to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where she remained until her passing. In her spare time she could be seen knitting a baby sweater for someone's new arrival.Clarissa BarnesJune 1, 2010 Clarissa worked many years at Health Sciences Centre and Deer Lodge as a Registered Nurse until her retirement in 2008.Beverly KearleyApril 16,2010Bev had a calling, a vocation, to become a nurse and healer. She entered the nursing program at Memorial University of Newfoundland and in 1977 graduated with both her BN and BSc. She found work in acute psychiatry at the Brandon Mental Health Centre. From 1977 until her death, Bev was employed in many nursing roles within the Brandon Regional Health Authority. Most recently, Bev was the Liaison Nurse for the Westman Crisis Service. In a sense, she finished where she began her nursing career - in mental health. She was a tireless and dedicated provider of quality care and developed programs, such as Wound Care, that are still in place today. In 1998, her achievements were formally recognized when she received the Excellence in Nursing Education award from MARN. Laurie HowellsApril 15, 2010 Laurie was born and raised in Winnipeg and graduated from the RN program at Misericordia Hospital at age 19. Over the last eight years Laurie held the position of Coordinator and Executive Director of the Lions Eye Bank of Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. Her dedication and commitment were instrumental to the success of Sharing a Vision and the entire eye donation program.Lorette WalkerApril 7, 2010 On stormy nights, Lorette often would show up at work at midnight and sleep on a cot. She didn't want to get stuck at home because of the weather and make the night nurse work overtime. She first became involved in the union in 1987 as vice-president of Worksite #40(Virden).Michelle Joan DumasMay 30, 2009 Recently retired St. Boniface nurse. He lived life to the fullest and was a nursing and patient care advocate. Gwen was a woman who lived her life to the fullest with the biggest spirit. Gwen had great compassion for her clients. – Submitted by Marcia Williamson, Local 97 Angela ShumilakMarch 21, 2008 Angela was HSC’s gift to the Urgent Care Unit at the Misericordia Health Centre. She was a class of 1975 graduate from the Winnipeg General Hospital. After graduation Angela worked on the medical floor “B4” at the General Hospital, transferring to their Adult Emergency Department in 1979. It was on November 26, 2001, that Angela became an Urgent Care nurse. In April of 2006 she took her expertise to the Health Links/Info Santé. That same year Angela retired in November. Angela embraced life in a very gentle way. Always in a good mood, she made every day a pleasure. Her calm demeanor and vast knowledge made her perfect for emergency nursing. We miss her dearly. Jane SandersFebruary 10, 2008 Jane attended the University of Manitoba where she attained a Bachelor of Nursing in 1978. She was dedicated to Public Health Nursing, first in Transcona, then East Kildonan and finally River Heights. Jane’s life was passionate. Her children were her greatest passion. With the arrival of a deaf child, she took two years leave from nursing to ground herself in American Sign Language and remained connected to the Deaf Community in Winnipeg. – Submitted by Bluma Levine, Local 97 Sandy Nahuliak2008 Sandy worked as an LPN in the Eriksdale Personal Care Home for many years. She was fondly remembered by her co-workers. – Submitted by Colleen Hogue Penny LaceyNovember 2006 Penny came from the Maritimes to work in The Pas – for ONE year. Twenty years later, as a devoted wife, mother and nurse, she was still very happy with her life in The Pas! Penny worked in all areas of the hospital until she found her “niche” on Obstetrics. She was the best kind of nurse who constantly found ways to become even better for the patients. Her latest desire was to become a Lactation Consultant – which she accomplished. She was truly devoted to helping new moms and babies have the best start possible. She would often say “What’s best for the patient?” Penny was loyal, committed, dependable and absolutely tireless. She was a feminist and believed strongly in womens’ rights, good healthy living, breastfeeding and recycling. She was passionate about fighting for what was right! She commenced work at Melita Health Center in 1962 and except for five short maternity leaves she nursed for 31 years. She retired from her position in 2004 but continued to work casual shifts. She was always willing to lend a helping hand at a moment’s notice. She was very involved on their farm whether it was helping her husband calve a cow or swathing a hay crop before she came to work an evening shift. She also kept busy being a part of her grad kids lives. Her calm demeanor and gentle ways is greatly missed by her coworkers in Melita. – Submitted by Jocelyn Wheelans Fay Susan (Pollon) Burton2005 Faye worked in Brandon, Sandy Lake, Wawanesa and Russel before coming to Birtle in 1998. She worked in Birtle for 17 years in Long Term and Acute Care. Faye was a great nurse: kind, calm and a natural at her job. Hana GragaOctober 21, 2000 Hana was born in Czechoslovakia, and moved to Winnipeg as a young child with her family. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BN degree. The Misericordia was where she worked as a Unit Clerk while a nursing student, and as a nurse after grad. Hana was easy going but conscientious, we all enjoyed working with her. Following the closure of the Emergency Department at the Misericordia where she was employed. Hana chose to venture into the field of clinical research, where she worked closely with Dr. Lezack, as well as others. Her intelligence, high level of energy, and her organizational skills earned her much respect in the field of research. – Submitted by Francoise Cahill Valerie FosterOctober 1997 Val graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital School of nursing in 1972/73. She worked in Pediatrics before joining the nurses in the Emergency Department at the Misericordia General Hospital, in approximately 1980. Val was the “go to” nurse whenever a sick child arrived in the department. Despite her life-long illness, Val was full of energy, terribly independent, and a lot of fun to be with. Kathleen JohnsonKathleen worked at the Arborg Health Centre from 1950-1962, then left to raise her family. She returned to the Centre in 1975-1982 where she worked as an aid.
