The Manitoba Nurses' Union represents four classifications of nurses: Registered Nurses (RNs), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs), Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). The definitions and criteria for these designations are governed by legislation and the respective professional colleges.
Registered Nurse (RN)
The registration and qualification of Registered Nurses in Manitoba is maintained by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).The scope of practice of Registered Nurses and the use of the title "Registered Nurse" is governed by the Provincial Registered Nurses Act and Regulations.
The majority of Registered Nurses covered by Manitoba Nurses Union collective agreements are classified as General Duty Registered Nurses, or "Nurse II." Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN)
Manitoba Registered Psychiatric Nurses registration and qualification is maintained by the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba (CRPNM) . The scope of practice and the use of the title "Registered Psychiatric Nurse" in Manitoba is governed by the Provincial Registered Psychiatric Nurses Act and Regulations .
Registered Psychiatric Nurses covered by Manitoba Nurses Union Collective Agreements are classified similarly to Registered Nurses and share the same salary scales.
Nurse Practitioners (NP)
The registration and qualification of Nurse Practitioners in Manitoba is maintained by the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) . NPs consult and collaborate with other health professionals as appropriate and in accordance with the Competencies for the Registered Nurse(Extended Practice) Register to ensure that the overall health care needs of their clients are met.
Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
The registration and qualification of Licensed Practice Nurses in Manitoba is maintained by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba (CLPNM). The scope of practice of Licensed Practical Nurses and the use of the title "Licensed Practical Nurse" is governed by the Provincial Licenced Practical Nurses Act and Regulations.
Licensed Practical Nurses covered by Manitoba Nurses' Union Collective Agreements have their own salary classification. Salary tables and an updated cross-Canada comparison will be available soon for LPNs under the new MNU Collective Agreement.
