The Joyce Gleason Scholarship FundThe Manitoba Nurses' Union is pleased to offer an annual scholarship of one thousand ($1,000) to a student enrolled for the first time in a nursing program (RN, LPN, RPN). The Joyce Gleason Scholarship Fund was established by the MNU in 2001 as part of an ongoing commitment to the profession of nursing. Students may apply for this scholarship in any year of their nursing program. Nurses enrolled in post degree and post diploma programs are not eligible. About Joyce Gleason"To care for nurses is to care for patients."Joyce Gleason was instrumental in founding the Manitoba Nurses' Union and the Canadian Federation of Nurses' Unions. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with her Bachelor of Nursing in 1949 and devoted her career, until her retirement in 1981, to advocating for nurses and for patients. She was instrumental in winning nurses' collective bargaining rights in the early 1970s. In 1975 she became the first Executive Director of the Manitoba Organization of Nurses' Associations, now know as the Manitoba Nurses' Union. She was the driving force in organizing many of the MNU Bargaining Units. Joyce died in 2000 after a lengthy illness. Her dedicated to the union movement and the nursing profession won her the respect of nurses throughout Canada. Joyce Gleason Scholarship Application The CFNU ScholarshipThe Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions has established a scholarship fund to help students in nursing programs throughout Canada.All CFNU scholarships will be awarded by the Member Organizations and CNSA with full recognition to CFNU. The Keith Lambert Memorial Scholarship FundThe Manitoba Nurses' Union established the Keith Lambert Scholarship Fund in January 1993 in recognition of Keith's many years of contribution to the labour movement and the Manitoba Nurses' Union. To be eligible for this fund, you must be a student member , which is available to you at no cost. About Keith LambertThroughout his nursing career at the Health Sciences Centre, Keith remained a strong advocate for the MNU. As a registered nurse, Keith involved himself with the ongoing administration and operations of Local 10. His union involvement included:
Throughout his years of involvement, Keith was guided by his philosophy "To see changes you have to be involved". It is hoped that through this scholarship in his honour, other nurses will be given the opportunity to increase their knowledge of and contribution to their union. |
