Sandi Mowat, MNU President, recently undertook the eighth leg of her tour, on the road to fulfilling her pledge to visit every Region by the April 2009 AGM. She visited nurses and facilities in the Central Regional Health Authority this leg, stopping at St. Claude, Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Swan Lake, Crystal City, Rock Lake, Manitou and Carman, Manitoba.

The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions released a statement supporting the work of the Canadian Labour Congress during our current parliamentary crisis.

The WRHA released the results of the review of the death of Brian Sinclair in the Health Sciences Centre ER. Findings of the review said that the problem was systemic and was not the result of actions or the inaction of any individual. The report also contained a number of recommendations to ensure that such a tragic occurrence does not happen again. The recommendations focus mainly on the triage process and are to implemented throughout the region.

MNU President Sandi Mowat was back in Brandon a few weeks ago, this time meeting with nurses in Personal Care Homes, wellness clinics and public health facilities, as part of her continuing province-wide tour, pledging to visit every Region by the April 2009 AGM.

MNU President Sandi Mowat recently joined Winnipeg Regional Health Authority President Brian Postl to get her flu shot.
As
part of the “Get the Shot, not the Flu” campaign Mowat agreed to have

Continuing on her province-wide tour MNU President Sandi Mowat accepted the invitation of Seven Oaks Local 72 members to see the renovations to the Emergency Department and to tour the facility. Mowat has pledged to visit every Region by the April 2009 AGM. She continues
to be impressed by the way in which nurses across Manitoba meet the
challenge of delivering quality health care.

Article 7A04 of the Central Table Agreement states that employers must
have signage which clearly communicates to the public that it will not
tolerate abuse of staff in health care facilities. When it became
apparent that not all employers were complying with the agreement the
MNU sent a letter stating that if signs were not in place by October
31st the union would file a grievance in each facility lacking a sign.

During the 2007 round of Central Table collective bargaining we
negotiated language in Article 7A04 that requires the employer to
install signage to clearly communicate that there will be zero
tolerance of abuse of staff in health care facilities. Such signage was
to be installed in public areas of all facilities in every region.
In
many instances, facilities moved quickly to install signage. However,
some regions have remained non-compliant with the collective agreement.
