AGM 2008 - Victoria Inn, Winnipeg

Nurses from across Manitoba are meeting in Winnipeg for the 33rd AGM of the Manitoba Nurses’ Union. Approximately 500 delegates will debate a number of issues which effect future bargaining and the policies of the union. Delegates will also discuss a resolution calling upon government to create more schools of nursing in both the urban and rural areas.

The meeting will also feature the following speakers: Sister Elizabeth Davis – A member of the Sisters of Mercy St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador will be speaking on Values Based Leadership (1:30 p.m. on April 28th).

Gail Fones – A former President of the College of Registered Nurses in Manitoba has devoted the last few years of her 46 year nursing career to working with the people of Uganda to prevent malaria.  She will be speaking on the Buy A Net Program. (10:30 a.m. on April 29th)

Liz Evans – Runs Vancouver’s supervised drug injection site. She is currently fighting to keep the site open by lobbying Prime Minister Harper to extend the exemption from narcotics laws which allow the site to operate. (1:30 p.m. on April 29th)

Linda Silas, President of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions will be speaking at 9:00 a.m. on April 29th.

MNU President, Maureen Hancharyk will address delegates at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 28th.
