A nurse was diagnosed with Impetigo, caused by MRSA, and was unable to work for several months due to illness.
The nurse filed a claim with the Workers' Compensation Board, but the claim was denied.
MNU appealed the decision and submitted a report, which included evidence, doctors'reports, and their side of the 'argument' as to why the claim was compensable.
The appeal was successful.
The WCB Review Office ruled that the nurse sustained an accident as defined in the Workers' Compensation Act under occupational disease.
The nurse will receive retroactive pay for the period of October 2010 to June 2011, when she was off work, and will be reimbursed for all out of pocket treatments.
"Nurses are exposed to many high risk factors on a daily basis,” said MNU president Sandi Mowat."MNU is constantly working to make workplaces safer for nurses by lobbying for legislation, raising awareness of risks in the profession and providing support when an injury or illness occurs."
