September 3, 2008

Sandi Mowat - President of Manitoba Nurses' Union

Sandi Mowat is now the President of the 11,000 member Manitoba Nurses' Union having officially assumed office September 2nd, 2008. She was elected by convention delegates in April of this year.

Mowat spent the majority of her nursing career in the E.R. department at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre as a Clinical Resource Nurse and a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. In recent years she worked as a General Duty Nurse in the HSC Hemiodialysis Unit. She has been the recipient of the HSC Nursing Excellence Award.

Mowat was first elected to the MNU Board in 1999 she was elected Vice-President in 2003. An experienced negotiator, she represented HSC as their bargaining rep on the Provincial Collective Bargaining Committee for a number of years. As a provincial nurses' union leader she represented her members on the ER Task Force, the Joint Nursing Council, the Manitoba Nursing Advisory Council and the Winnipeg Hospital/Health Care Regional Nursing Advisory Committee.  She was also the recipient of the union's highest honour - the Yellow Ribbon Award for activism in the community and in the workplace.

As MNU President, Mowat is anticipating a challenging year beginning with the upcoming interest-based arbitration to keep nurses' salaries competitive and preparing to bargain the central table agreement which expires in September, 2009.

2009 bargaining will be uppermost on her mind as her first term unfolds.

"It will be critical that we find a balance between recruiting young people to the profession and keeping our senior nurses who have stayed through the hard times and given so much. We must find innovative ways to do both."
