Silas urges renegotiation of Health Accord |
|
President of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) Linda Silas is in Winnipeg for the Council of the Federation, a three-day conference involving the premiers from across Canada. At the top of the agenda for nurses is the renegotiation of the 2004 Health Accord, which expires in 2014.
Silas said that it is essential for all stakeholders to know what a successor agreement would contain for longer-term planning and the continuity of services.
"We can't afford the uncertainty that short-term arrangements bring where everyone wonders what will happen in the next couple of years or so,"said Silas.
CFNU also released a report by economist Hugh Mackenzie and health policy expert Dr. Michael Rachlis on the sustainability of Medicare. The report was commissioned by CFNU to give context to the premiers' upcoming health care discussions and to dispel the myth that Medicare is not sustainable.
Mackenzie and Rachlis examined the economics of Canada's health care system in the context of its history, international experience and future challenges including population aging.
Based on its findings, The Sustainability of Medicare report lists specific recommendations for a new agreement.
A new Health Accord must:
-
Improve and extend the position of the federal government in funding Medicare;
-
Provide opportunities for improvements within a publicly funded and delivered system;
-
Make investments in home care and long-term care;and
-
Establish a national, universal Pharmacare plan.
