Manitoba nurses reached a tentative agreement with employers late
Saturday, March 8th. The settlement calls for a 10% increase over two
years, ie, 4.8% (2.5% general increase and 2.3% market adjustment) in
the first year and 5.2% (2.9% general increase and 2.3% market
adjustment) in the second year.
In addition, effective October 1, 2008, a further increase will be
determined by an independent arbitrator to ensure all Manitoba nurses
are in fourth place in Canada in terms of wages.
The agreement also included long service recognition in the form of an
extra week of vacation in the 20th year and every five years
thereafter, maternity top up, employer paid Disability and Rehab
premiums, mentorship premiums and improved northern isolation
remoteness allowance.
MNU President Maureen Hancharyk said that the union will be
recommending acceptance of the offer. “We think this is a good offer
that will keep Manitoba nurses competitive across the country and
continue to help us deal with the current nursing shortage in our
province.”
