Changes to the constitution, and therefore, to how MNU as an organization is run are dealt with yearly at our AGM. If members would like to see changes within MNU or our processes, they must submit either a constitutional amendment or a resolution. Before members can do that, they must understand the difference between the two:
Constitutional amendments are just that, proposed amendments to the current constitution and they must be submitted by a specified deadline, usually in early February.
Resolutions are formal motions regarding issues that are not currently addressed in the constitution. Resolutions can be submitted until the Thursday before the AGM.
So, what’s the process for submitting a constitutional amendment or resolution? Follow these five steps below!
Solidarity School Tip: Make sure your MNU email is up to date as you will receive an email in December from MNU looking for a “request of constitutional amendments” and instructions for how to submit.
1. Once you receive the email in December, ensure that for any constitutional amendment or resolution you would like to submit, there is a mover and a seconder; one of which who is a voting delegate at the upcoming AGM.
2. Submit your constitutional amendment or resolution by following the instructions in the email by the specified deadline.
3. The constitutions and resolutions committee will review your submission and are always there to help assist with wording to ensure your submission is correct.
4. The constitutional amendment or resolution will then be presented to the delegation at the AGM, the movers will have a chance to speak to it and let the delegation know why they believe the changes are necessary.
5. The issue will be debated on the floor, and then the vote will take place. Constitutional amendments must have a 2/3 vote to pass, while a resolution requires more than a 50% vote to pass.
As a union member, it is your right to speak up and ask for change if you’d like to see it. But there is also a process that must be followed to do so. We’re always here to help. If you have any questions, reach out to your local president, your LRO, or anyone here at provincial office. Always remember, we’re a team, and we’ve got you!
