This week, we’re shining a spotlight on Christine St. George, one of MNU’s dedicated Labour Relations Officers (LRO) who’s spent 20 years as an MNU member and the last 13 months in her current role. Christine proudly serves various worksites across Prairie Mountain Health and Winnipeg.

A Passion for Advocacy

Christine's journey into labour relations began long before she took on her role as an LRO. As a nurse, her commitment to better working conditions and patient care pushed her into roles on various committees and eventually as a worksite executive for the union. After being appointed to a committee to represent all nurses in Community Care, Christine said, “I realized I wanted to do more, bring nurse voices forward, and push for real change.” Eager to deepen her understanding, she pursued labour relations courses that prepared her to better advocate for her fellow nurses. When the opportunity to run as a worksite president came along, she embraced it and eventually became Regional President. Now, as an LRO, Christine is thrilled to be supporting nurses and addressing their needs.

Day in the Life

A typical day for Christine involves discussing issues with employers, answering emails about the Collective Agreement, and attending various meetings related to discipline, graduated return to work, nursing advisory, and union management. She also keeps in regular contact with worksite presidents to ensure they have the resources they need to assist their members.

Support and Empowerment

Christine’s favourite part of being an LRO is the advocacy and support she provides to MNU members during challenging times. “Helping nurses navigate the waters and being their voice when they are too tired and scared to fight for themselves is what makes this role rewarding,” she explains.

Fulfilling Moments and Key Advice

For Christine, the most fulfilling moments come when she can help her members and see their happiness. Her key piece of advice for MNU members is straightforward: “Know your Collective Agreement. If you think something isn’t right, reach out to your president or your LRO. It’s important to seek guidance from a reliable source.”

Off the Clock

On a personal note, Christine is a proud grandmother to six grandchildren and enjoys tackling home renovation projects in her spare time.
