We’re excited to introduce Michael Howell, MNU’s newest Labour Relations Officer, who joined the team just last month. With a background in labour relations and a knack for handling workplace dynamics, Michael brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to MNU.
A Unique Path to Labour Relations
Michael’s journey to becoming an LRO is a unique one. He started his career in facility support at St. Boniface General Hospital, working part-time for over a decade while pursuing his education. With a major in Sociology and later a diploma in Human Resources Management, he found himself drawn to the intricacies of labour relations—especially the challenge of navigating employee-employer conflicts. Michael’s resume is packed: he’s served as a Labour and Employee Relations Consultant for Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, specializing in workplace investigations and grievances, and most recently, he worked with the Government of Manitoba on collective bargaining as a Senior Analyst.
Looking Forward
So, what drew him to MNU? Michael is looking forward to supporting nurses by working alongside them and their employers to create a healthier, happier workplace. “Labour relations, while difficult, can truly help create a better work environment for everyone,” he says. “Every day in this field is unique, and that’s part of what makes it so rewarding.”
Pro Tip for Members
Michael’s advice is simple: “Speak up and stay honest.” Issues can’t be addressed if no one knows about them. Chances are, your coworkers feel the same way you do, so don’t hesitate to share concerns with both union leaders and management. Open dialogue is key to building a supportive workplace for everyone.
Did Someone Say Punk Rock?
And here’s a fun fact: long before he stepped into the world of labour relations, Michael had his sights set on a different stage—he played in a punk rock band! Although his music career didn’t skyrocket (by his own admission, “we weren’t very good, even for punk rock”), Michael values the experience and may even reveal the band’s name if you have the opportunity to meet him.
