At MNU, we believe you should always make decisions that are best for you and your family. Occasionally, temporary out-of-scope management positions become available within your workplace. If one of these opportunities aligns better with your current needs, we encourage you to consider it. However, it’s essential to understand the steps involved and how to navigate this process correctly.

To keep it simple, we’ve outlined the basics here. For more detailed information, we recommend consulting the MNU Handbook available on the MNU portal and referring to Article 25 of the Collective Agreement.

Key Steps and Considerations

If you accept a temporary out-of-scope management position, you must request a Leave of Absence (LOA) from your Local or Worksite. Once your Local receives your written LOA request, they will respond with details regarding the status of your MNU membership during your leave. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Seniority: You will not accrue seniority while on LOA.
  • Union Participation: You will not attend union meetings or receive union mailings, including emails.
  • In-Scope Positions: You cannot use your seniority to apply for or be awarded any in-scope positions within the bargaining unit.
  • Union Representation: The union cannot represent you while you are on LOA.
  • LOA Duration: Out-of-scope LOAs must not exceed 60 weeks (or 80 weeks if replacing an employee on Parenting/Parental Leave). LOAs exceeding this timeline will result in the inability to maintain MNU seniority.
  • Vacancy Posting: The vacancy created by your LOA will be posted as a term position for the duration of your leave.

If there are any changes to your expected return timeline during your term position, it’s important to notify your Local/Worksite promptly.

If you have questions or need clarification about this process, please contact your Local/Worksite President or Labour Relations Officer.
