August 8, 2025, WINNIPEG, MB – In a decisive move to protect their safety and well-being, nurses at Health Sciences Centre (HSC) have voted overwhelmingly (94%) to grey list the facility. This action comes in response to the Employer’s continued failure to adequately address critical safety concerns that have been raised repeatedly by frontline workers.

“Nurses have been crystal clear that safety is a non-negotiable priority,” said Darlene Jackson, President of the Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU). “The situation at HSC has become untenable. Nurses are being asked to work in conditions where their safety is consistently compromised, and we’ve had enough.”

As Manitoba’s flagship hospital, HSC has a duty to lead by example in protecting its staff and creating a culture that values the well-being of healthcare professionals. However, despite numerous calls for action, the necessary improvements have not been made, prompting this latest step in holding the Employer accountable.

“The Employer now has a clear opportunity to meet the reasonable conditions set by nurses,” Jackson continued. “The decision to lift the grey list rests entirely in their hands. Nurses will no longer accept empty promises or inaction that puts their safety at risk.”

The grey listing vote is a reflection of the collective frustration felt by nurses who continue to face increasingly unsafe working conditions. With this move, HSC nurses are sending a strong message that it is time for real, tangible changes to ensure their safety while providing the best care to Manitobans.

MNU remains committed to advocating for the safety and well-being of nurses and will continue to work toward meaningful solutions that will make all healthcare facilities safer for both workers and patients.

MNU represents more than 13,000 nurses across the province, advocating for fair wages, better working conditions, and quality patient care. Since 1975, MNU has been a bold voice for nurses, providing support and pushing for a stronger healthcare system. Learn more at manitobanurses.ca.
